On Sunday, January 19, 2025, musicians from CNEDMC, Chesterfield Symphony Orchestra (CSO) and from the wider community came together for a day of collaborative music-making at Outwood Academy in Chesterfield. Open to players of Grade 5 standard and above, the event offered an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform symphonic works in a full-size orchestra, all under the baton of conductor River Edis-Smith.
A Focused Day of Rehearsal and Performance
The event provided a practical and immersive orchestral experience, especially for many CNEDMC participants who had never before played in such a large ensemble. With the programme featuring Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 ("Unfinished") and Márquez’s Conga del Fuego, the workshop combined classical precision with lively rhythms.
The day was carefully structured, with rehearsals that allowed musicians to work through the details of the music while gaining insight into ensemble dynamics and the interpretation of these two contrasting works.
Broadening Musical Horizons
One of the key goals of the workshop was to give CNEDMC players the chance to experience the unique power of a full-size orchestra. The combination of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion created a sound that many participants described as inspiring and motivating. For young musicians, this was an opportunity to develop their skills and explore the energy of large-scale performance.
Conductor and Collaboration
Under the guidance of River Edis-Smith, the orchestra achieved cohesion and clarity. His leadership helped players focus on both the technical and expressive aspects of the pieces, ensuring that everyone could contribute meaningfully to the overall sound. The collaboration between experienced CSO members and CNEDMC players further enhanced the experience, fostering a supportive and productive atmosphere.
Final Play Through
The day concluded with a final play through which was recorded, showcasing the results of the day’s hard work. From the introspective mood of Schubert’s symphony to the vibrant energy of Márquez’s Conga, the orchestra demonstrated impressive progress in a short time.
Reflections and Moving Forward
This event highlighted the benefits of collaboration between CNEDMC and CSO, not only in terms of musical achievement but also in strengthening connections within the local music community. We hope the successful workshop has set a strong foundation for similar events in the future, offering musicians opportunities to grow, connect, and perform.
Thank you to all who participated and supported this event. We look forward to the next chapter of this exciting partnership.
